conflict often thought negatively

conflict resolver
oh know its bad
a response to violence
violence is not a new phenomenon
violence is there bc they dont have any voice and agency

humble about proclivity towards violence
tone of voice sounds violence

avoidance
numb
violence gets worse

shame about unmitigated violence
the shame spiral makes us more likely to be violent
bc shamed for our actions.

shame is a pathogen of violence
shaming them for their badness

talking about a criminal justice system . . . dangerous people

all capable of acting violently
we make enemies of people who do bad things
we a re all capable

respond to violence
how it happens
why it happens
respond

center of disease control got interested in violence bc violence was the leading cause of death

violence had to be addressed
edidemiology
nature of violence
proactive way
stop it

epidemic out of control
understand and mitigate
systemic social conflicts that create violence in our lives

if we are truly trying to understand violence, we have some things we need to look at . . .
understand

what constitutes violence
is it physical violence?

is it person to person

at what point does this dividing line occur
person to person
natural disasters

if just a physical phenomenon.

self-inflicted

consent

what if no intent?

no malice aforethought??
babies

constant state of fear
flight or flight response
via flight or freeze

to act violently
to act violently
it is from the reptilian brain

when we act violently, we feel justified bc it seemed like survival

shamed either by internal mechanisms
or by
suddenly in internal shaming
external shaming
invalidated for our actions
we feel victimized

we go back into our flight or flight response

we perpetrate violence
so that we feel victimized

we are likely to perpetrate violence again

abusers feel like victims
In domestic violence

hard to find out the victim

victims are oftentimes taught to feel responsible for abuse
we end up perpetuating habituated patterns of violence
breaking the law

secondary prevention
classes for offenders
people who committ violence
in primary prevention strategies

they don’t have a way
epidemiology works to get to

greater social change

think about aids

who had it . . .

kids have education about needles and condoms
now normalized
not stigmatised

seat belts

danger

education is the most powerful way to shift change

get people out of the cycle of violence
creating a change in the system
the exploding is less

think about violence   what it is
react as bad---no understanding
then to stem violence
repercussion
